Audience Profile Slam Cartel

Rock and Roll

Rock fans, can be hard core, anti-establishment youthful types, but at the same time (depending on the specific genere of Rock n Roll, the fans can be described as those outlaws we see them as, but with kind hearts and good meaning, they are just ruthless and rough when jumping and clamping to the sound of Foo Fighters or RHCP...

For Slam Cartel, this is the case. The fans really get into the music, but the narrative of the bands songs, always deliver a meaning that is positive, or interesting, rather than destructive.

The young hip rockers, don't really exist anymore, a large majority have been sucked into the main stream void that is Spotify's "Top 100" charts. But there are still some there, the majority of the fans are more in their mid 20s to late 40s and even 50s in extremes. Reason being is that this particular Genre of Rock, was very popular among the youth of the 70s, 80s and 90s, after that you Pop Music.

Because the audience profiles will vary so much, I've done two...

This is... Lets say Seth, he's at University, and
despite growing up despising the "old and
uncool" music that his parents had to offer,
he has come to appreciate the sheer awesomeness
of Rock n Roll, at a respectful level that is...

He can go to these concerts and become this
rough and tumble dude, that society is for some
reason afraid of, but in reality he is normal, and
his style of music doesn't really effect his lifestyle.

Age : Early to Mid 20s

Now say hello to the guy who brought up Seth, to some how enjoy the style of music that he liked when he was young, back in the 80s...

Like Seth, Dad doesn't let this Rock n Roll lifestyle become real for him, sure he would enjoy the concert, he loves listening to the bands material at home. But at his age, enacting the lifestyle would be... uncool, and unprofessional. He is an adult and he has to set an example, but that doesn't mean he cant enjoy himself.

Age : 40s to 50s

Though i haven't mentioned, this profiling isn't specific to men, women have just as much reason to enjoy this style of music, but in this case they go without saying... Because they are mostly the girlfriend of Seth and the wife of Dad, Seth's Mother...

Mood Boards, Why They are GOOD!

What someone is thinking and feeling about a creative idea, an intended vision for a piece of work, is limited by how good a persons verbal communication skills are at expressing this project to others, and to help them understand why they would come on this journey with you. Mood boards help others to 'get inside our heads, and to see what we see. They aren't perfect representations of what we see, thats a near impossibility, but it is a fantastic guide-line for you to explain, and helps others to comprehend this hard to describe concept.
That said, mood boards can be a pain to create, with many hours spent trawling image galleries, websites, books and magazines looking for that perfect image to sum up your intended feel for the work at hand. So here are a collection of tips to help make your mood board making more effective – and double your chances of winning that pitch!
It makes it all worth while...

This took me around 15 minutes of crafting, and its all that i need to get the point across, whilst being accompanied by the single i want to use, and some other information that is important, its a brilliant reference to use...
... However, you may find one issue, or advantage depending on the idea. Some may say that you haven't got enough, and that you need to expand on what you have in order for them to truly get you. But the brilliant truth is, thats a waist of time, when all that you have to do is show them what you have and say, "look at what i have... now imagine this". This method saves time, and as well as showing the inside of your imagination, you're also tapping into theirs, and they will come on this journey with you, or will show you a new journey that you can go on.
Don't feel disheartened when they don't get it, because only two things could have gone wrong...
Either your not explaining yourself well enough, and need to go deeper, or be more specific with the images you choose.
Or, the idea isn't worth pursuing, because its no good, or undoable, and this isn't a bad thing either, as you will begin to explore an idea that will be better overall, and more worth your time. And in the end, i personally would rather do something that is possible and good, than work with less than i have, and make that amazing idea... really... really... badly...

Lukes Input

We had a prominent member of the Media department, Creative Director Luke Gilchrist, come into the class to discuss what our Music video ideas should be along the lines of, and what to avoid. He gave us some recommendations about choosing songs, and synthesising bands for the Purpose of the Course, or using  original bands if we had one to use.

His main points about music videos:

  • Don't be to cliche, i.e. love stories, boy meats girl, heart break, etc... they are too overused and unoriginal.
  • Think beyond the surroundings, we have a studio, and we can go further than the woods of Surrey if we want to shoot on Location.
  • The department wont help you with the idea, but they will when it comes to minor or overly difficult takes that we have little experience with, however, this project will only be to trivial if we make it.
  • No Longer than 3:20
His main points about using bands:

  • Make sure that they don't take over the process
  • Make sure they can make dates
  • Make sure they have good material
  • The whole process is much more industry standard, as we are using a real group, and producing something that they could use to project their image.

A2 Music Video Course Work Ideas

Idea One

Band : Slam Cartell, ( Real Band For Music Video )

Song : (To Be Decided)

The Band Slam Cartell, is a small established Rock and Roll / Heavy Band, who operate out of London, and have played all across the UK. They have an established fan base in the tens of thousands, and have a good website and media coverage, but all they are missing is a Music Video! Which is why i thought it would be cool to make a music video with them, as it would be popular outside of the Hurtwood Circle...

The music video starts with the band, on a stage in a field, if possible on the day, a light drizzle, or at the least, cloudy weather.

They begin to play, when from either side of them in the distances, from two crowds, confronting each other. (Riot, Medieval Knights etc have been considered).

As the song builds the two sides sprint to clash in the centre where the band is. But as they become within touching distance, the lead singer gestures them to stop. The Band Pause, and then resume to everyone rocking out to the band.

Idea Two

Song : Seth Macfarlane's " You & I "

Video : A Fifties Love Story

Despite being well known for comedy and cartoons, with critically acclaimed shows like Family Guy, Seth is actually a very talented singer. And has a very well known song called 'You and I' a 50s style orchestral love song, in which he give us a performance that is like nothing we would expect of him.

The Music video starts with one singer, silhouetted by Jersey Boys style lights, this is consistent through out the video. Which cuts backward and forward to two love birds, in 50-60s costume, picnics and walks and generally romantic things. At the end of the song, we find that the singer is actually the male lover, and he is performing to an empty theatre.

Idea Three

Song : Sail

Music Video : H.M. Armed Forces Tribute

After talking to a few friends who work in the MOD, i found it would be possible to be attached to the Army, the Navy or RAF, to film them on intense training exercises, to capture the power and professionalism into doing the job. the Song is powerful, and so is the action, the reason why i thought it would be a good idea is because its real, and nothing else would equal the amount production value that it would appear to have. It all looks much better, rather than using actors, who wouldn't know what it feel or be like and have no prior experience.
